SEO Takes More than On-Site Optimization

Blogging, SEO, Social Media No Comments

When I say SEO, you probably think of hours spent researching keywords, tweaking your website, analyzing the results, and tweaking your site again. That’s only about half of the picture.

To make the most of your website, you need inbound links, relevancy and traffic, which means that you actually need to get out there and build interest in your site.

If you already have active social media accounts, this is a little easier. You already have people interested in what you’re doing for your business and on your website. Share new pages and blog posts, ask for feedback. People will want to check out your site, and they’ll pass the link on if they like it, building more interest. Social media will also allow you to keep on top of any trending topics or exciting news in your business field (a great way to come up with regular blog ideas). Something exciting happen? Blog about it, and then share the post to the link. Regularly updated content means higher page rank. This also helps you keep your site relevant, which also improves page rank.

If you want incoming links, you need to find people who will want to link to your site. When your site is still new, the best way to to do this is through going out and making contacts. Get involved in the community of similar blogs. Post relevant comments, share links from your site and from social media sites. Ask about doing a guest blog post. Again, you need to be using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to meet these other bloggers and website owners. If you can prove that your site is relevant and interesting, other bloggers will link to you without you asking them to.

You can spend hours on just SEO, and it will help improve your page rank and visibility. However, if you really want to get the most return from your SEO efforts, you need to use social media to build relationships with others and to promote your site. It takes more time and effort, but the pay-off– higher relevancy, quality incoming links and an increase in traffic– is worth it.
